Tijimbat Minyerri - Wet Season 2014

Our name, Teachabout, closely aligns with the word, tijimbat, a Kriol word from the Roper River region, which means 'teach your kids about everything'.

Teachabout has a unique approach to school holiday programs. Our programs are well thought-out and expansive with a strong focus on building relationships with the kids, their families and community members. They incorporate a wide variety of activities including art projects, science experiments, cultural knowledge, drama, ICT, music, dance and sport. English literacy, numeracy and problem-solving skills are integrated across these activities and also form the focus of specific sessions.

The Activity Leader Mob

Andrew
Andrew has lived in Britain, Australia and Japan and moved to Melbourne for university. He has just finished his second year in Maths and Meteorology at the University of Melbourne and is eager to finish his degree next year. Having spent time in other countries like England, India and Nepal working in schools, he is excited for his first trip with Teachabout. He’s looking forward to getting stuck into some fun science with the kids and experiencing the wet season in the Northern Territory.

Georgi
Georgi is one subject away from completing her Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Australian Indigenous Studies, at the University of Melbourne. She is excited to be allowed out of the library and into the sunshine as she takes a year off from study in 2014. This Wet Season program will be Georgi’s second time as an Activity Leader and her fourth visit to the Minyerri community. Georgi is looking forward to seeing her friends in Minyerri and spending time away from the city; fishing, eating, having a yarn, listening and learning.

Jason
Jase is from a small country town called Jindera near Albury on the border of NSW and VIC. He has been in Melbourne the past 7 years studying medical research. 2015 will be the third and final year of his PhD in Molecular Biology at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. When he's not pushing a pen or a pipette he can be found kicking the footy or watching the mighty Bombers in action! Jase loves to travel and can't wait to visit Minyerri for the first time!

Morgan
Morgan has the dubious honour of never having lived anywhere but Melbourne in his 21 years, and has (finally!) just finished his Honours in Finance to round off his Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne. This will be Morgan’s first trip to Minyerri and he looks forward to running and participating in some exciting activities as well as practising his advanced range of outdoor skills, which include and are mostly limited to sleeping on uneven ground, carrying things, tying his shoelaces at a moderate pace and provisioning himself lavishly with junk food.

Rita
This will be Rita’s seventh visit to Minyerri and her fourth as an Activity Leader. She has recently completed her Masters of Social Science in International Development at RMIT University. Rita is looking forward to ditching Melbourne trams and making use of her driver’s licence when she collects Teachabout participants in the troopie for the day’s activities.

Tash
Tash splits her time between her Law & International Relations double degree at La Trobe University and being a ballerina, but has spent the best part of 2013 jet setting around the globe having the time of her life. This Wet Season program will be Tash’s first experience as an Activity Leader and she can’t wait to get up there. Tash has worked with kids in many different countries but is really looking forward to visiting a new part of her country, and learning from a bunch of great kids!
